Teen help for parents

If you have been searching very long for help for your teen you may already be frustrated. There is a never-ending supply of websites, and there are many people you can talk to. The problem most parents experience is the determination as to whether or not their child is really bad enough to send away. Once this decision is made, the selection process seems to move ahead a little easier. Usually if you think your child needs help he or she probably does. Most parents learn that their child was much worse than they thought after the teen starts to come clean with their parents.

If you have decided to take a wait-and-see approach with your teen, that might be all that is needed. Here are a few ideas: Set some ground rules for your teen. Establish a curfew and some basic ground rules that you both can live with. Require accountability from your child as to where they have been and who they have been with and don't be afraid to check out the validity of their claims. It is good to know beforehand where your child is going and a number to the house they will be at and an address. It doesn't hurt to drive by the house where they are going to check on them and make sure they are ok. Usually if a teen is not doing anything wrong they have no problem with you checking it out.

When you have decided to proceed with the investigation of possible placement options for your child here are a few suggestions:

  • Visit the facility if possible and meet staff and owners
  • Call references provided by the facility
  • Check with the local government to see if there are any problems with the facility you are considering
  • Realize that a program may have been investigated for reports of child abuse. But also realize that many of the parents who have sent kids to these types of options have also been reported by their children for child abuse. An investigation does not mean abuse happened, just that it was reported. If charges have been filed there may be some validity to the reports.
