Teens and College

There are many factors for a teen to consider when choosing a college or university to attend. Some of these factors include tuition costs, college lifestyle, and specific career goals of teens. All of these factors are important in determining which college the teen will attend.

Tuition

When teens are determining which college to attend, tuition will become an important factor, especially during an economic downturn as we are currently experiencing. Teens and parents are becoming more aware of the cost of sending the teen to college. Many teens will make the decision to attend a local community college while they earn their general education credits. This will allow them to cut costs, as tuition at a local college is usually substantially less than a larger college or university.

Also, if teens attend a local college or a college close to home, they have the option of living at home and saving housing money. This will, of course, affect their independence, but the benefits many times can outweigh the negatives. Once teens finish with their general education and have decided on long term career goals, they can transfer to a larger school that meets their specific career goals and aspirations.

Lifestyle

Another determining factor when teens are choosing a college or university to attend is that of their preference to lifestyle. Every college is different when it comes to lifestyle. Some colleges may have gained the reputation of a party school over the years. Other may be located in a small town that doesnt offer much in the way of entertainment while students are not in class or studying. Parents can and should be aware of the school and its reputation. Parents can unknowingly send their teens to a school that may not be the environment best suited to the success of their student.

Grades suffer and ultimately many teens return home with failing grades after only the first semester. In addition, many parents and teens should consider colleges that are sponsored by a particular religious faith that reflects their beliefs and values.

Career Goals

Finally, and important factor when determining a college or university involves the specific career goals of the teen. Every school excels in a different field and with this focus on a specific career or vocation comes an advantage when trying to enter the industry after graduating. Certain schools may have a reputation of a good or prestigious program that potential employers will look to when hiring an individual among many applicants. No matter which college a teen chooses, it is important that the decision is an informed one made by both teens and parents.
